48 providers, one character — how Medusa slots differ from each other

58 games and 48 different providers: the same face repeats in the catalog dozens of times, but almost every studio has built its own version. Only five providers have made more than one game — the other 43 have tackled the theme just once.

In this piece we look at why the same character attracts so many different contributors, who the recurring names in the catalog are and how a publishing span of more than a decade appears in the catalog today.

Why does the same character attract so many studios?

Medusa is from Greek mythology, and no studio owns the character or can prevent others from using it. Unlike licensed movie or game IP, the subject is freely available for anyone to use without a royalty agreement. This low barrier is directly visible in our catalogue: 58 games and 48 different providers — on average fewer than one and a half games per studio.

It also follows that the theme has been used by studios of very different sizes: the same catalog contains both large, well-known houses and smaller creators for whom Medusa is a single title investment. Neither size is “right” here — both appear in the catalog on equal terms.

Five providers who have returned again

43 of 48 providers have made only one Medusa-themed game. The other five have returned to the topic more often:

The full provider list, including all 43 single-game studios, can be found on the page Providers.

Same name, different game

When a studio returns to a theme more often, it doesn't mean a sequel of the same game — each title is its own product with its own mechanics and numbers. PG Soft's Medusa and Medusa II are two different games, not a version and an update — so you should always read numbers from that game's own page, not assume based on the studio's earlier title.

Six games, same name “Medusa”

One detail of the catalog is worth knowing before searching for a game by name: six different providers have named their game exactly ”Medusa”, without an extra word — PG Soft, GMW, TaDa Gaming, KA Gaming, Blueprint and AllWaySpin. Six completely different games, different mechanics and different figures, the same name in the search field.

Additionally, eight games use the possessive name “Medusa's…” — for example Medusa's Wild (High 5 Games) and Medusa's Golden Gaze (2by2 Gaming) — which are no more related to each other than to six "plain Medusas." The practical rule is the same as we already explained in our RTP article: always check the provider next to the game's name , and don't assume that the same name means the same game or the same numbers. For this reason the provider is shown immediately under the title on each of our game pages.

More than a decade same character: 2014–2026

The oldest games in our catalog are from 2014: Medusa: The Quest of Perseus (Incredible Technologies), Medusa 2 and Medusa Scratch (both NextGen). The newest four games are from 2026, the most recent being Medusa Dark Ages (Skywind Group, maaliskuu 2026). A steady stream of releases fills the gap each year — the range therefore covers over a decade of slot development around the same character.

Release year isn't a quality mark. An older game can be mechanically simpler — often with fixed paylines without Megaways or avalanche-chains that became more common later — but RTP and volatility are always read from the game's own details, not the release year. The catalog's absolute oldest and newest games can be found in the collection Classics and the latest feed from the page New releases.

Same character, different role

Differences between studios aren't limited to mechanics — also the role Medusa plays in the story varies. Some games cast her as an opponent or a monster the player fights against: Artemis vs Medusa (Quickspin) and Midas VS Medusa (Bulletproof Games) build directly in the name of confrontation. Some instead make her the story's main character or source of power, on whose side the player is — a large portion of “Medusa's…” -named games belong to this group.

The third group connects the character to a broader mythology: Arena of Gods – Rise of Medusa (Rabcat) brings Zeus to the mix, and Medusa vs Perseus: Stone Duel (iconic21, helmikuu 2026) builds directly around the Perseus myth. Same source material, three completely different ways to tell it.

What we don't do

We do not rank studios in order of quality in this piece — that would be subjective, not factual. We only report what the pool shows: how many providers, how many games each, and from which years.

Known names among a single-game selection

One-game providers include both small studios and well-known houses in the industry, which have each done the Medusa theme only once in their own style. Quickspin brought the topic up Artemis vs Medusa -the game's, IGT published Medusa Queen Of Stone -the game and Novomatic version called Myth of Medusa Gold. Also Playtech Origins is included with its own Age of the Gods Medusa & Monsters -with its gameplay, as part of the broader Age of the Gods series.

This says the same thing as the previous point in different words: the subject is not exclusive to any one studio type. A large house may make one version that fits its series, and a small studio may make one title that is its only release for the year — both games appear in our catalog on equal footing, and both are marked by numbers.

How to browse the catalog by provider

  1. Start from the page Providers, if you want to browse by studio — five multi-game providers are highlighted at the top and the remaining 43 are listed alphabetically.
  2. Use collections, if a mechanic or feature interests you more than the maker — collections group games across studio boundaries.
  3. Always check the game‑specific page before assuming that another game from the same studio would be similar — the figures and mechanics can differ completely, such as above was evident in the case of six identically named games.
  4. Don't draw any conclusions from the name alone — the provider next to the game's name is always the info that tells which studio made the game you're looking at.

Short summary

  • 58 games, 48 providers — Medusa is a freely usable mythological character, not anyone's licensed IP.
  • 43 providers has made only one game; five have returned to the theme: Spinomenal (5), NextGen (3), StakeLogic, Wazdan and PG Soft (2 each).
  • Releases cover the years 2014–2026 — over a decade of slot development.
  • The same character takes a different role in different games: antagonist, protagonist or part of a wider mythology.
  • Studio or release year does not tell RTP or volatility — these are always read on a per-game basis.

Frequently asked

Quick answers about providers and years

Why are so many different studios making games from the same character?

Greek mythology is public domain, so any studio can use Medusa without a licensing fee. This is why our catalogue contains 48 different providers around the same character — the bar is low, and each studio interprets the theme in its own technical and artistic style.

Which studio has made the most Medusa-themed games?

Most games in our catalog are from Spinomenal, five in total. NextGen has the next highest number with three, and StakeLogic, Wazdan and PG-Soft have two games each. The remaining 43 providers appear in the catalog with one game each.

From what year are the catalog’s oldest games?

The oldest games in the catalog were released in 2014: Medusa: The Quest of Perseus, Medusa 2 and Medusa Scratch. The newest games are from 2026, so the range covers over a decade of slot development.

Is an older game automatically worse than a new one?

No. Release year is not a quality mark nor a predictor of RTP or volatility — both should always be read from the game's own info, not the year. An older game may be technically simpler, but that doesn't make it bad if the numbers and feel suit your taste.

How to browse the catalog if you want to compare games from the same studio?

On the Providers page games are grouped by studio, and each studio with multiple games has its own provider page showing its full selection of Medusa-themed titles on a single page.
